Iowa Colony is a village in Brazoria County, Texas, United States. The population was 804 at the 2000 census. Iowa Colony was founded as a major speed trap along State Highway 288 in 1965, as it has five short areas (fingers) of its city limits that cross over 288. This allowed the Iowa Colony Police to consider speeders crossing through these fingers as ticketable. Iowa Colony is now patrolled by the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office. The name of the town was given "Iowa Colony" because many of the first-generation residents were farmers who moved from Iowa to escape a cold climate, and wanted to farm all year round, which was possible in Southeast Texas.
